Victor L. DeGolyer, 94, of Gloversville, passed away on Thursday afternoon, October 10, 2013, at his home, surrounded by his family.
Born November 12, 1918, in Amsterdam, he was the son of the late Jacob and Janet (Whiteford) DeGolyer.
Mr. DeGolyer proudly served his country, first in the US Naval Reserve from his high school years until joining the US Army in 1942, serving until his honorable discharge with the rank of TSgt in 1945. While serving in the Army with the 44th Division, 2nd Battalion, 114 Infantry, he was Col. Norman Schwarzkopf Sr.'s personal radio operator, seeing action in Austria, France and Germany.
Victor was married to Lenore Huckans DeGolyer on July 6, 1947; they shared 53 years together until her passing on November 1, 2000.
In his early working career, Victor worked for Mohawk Mills Carpets. He then became a dedicated and loyal employee of General Telephone Company, retiring as a Central Office technician with its Johnstown location. During his entire life he endeavored to apply a strong work ethic and was always thankful for opportunities afforded him.
Mr. DeGolyer was a member of the North Main Street United Methodist Church, Gloversville. Victor was a HAM Radio operator from the age of 14, 81 years in total, using the call sign W2RPL. He was also an antique car enthusiast and enjoyed restoring them. He was a member of the Model A Restorers Club.
Victor was an avid outdoorsman, enjoying camping, canoeing and hiking. He loved playing his harmonica at family gatherings. Victor spent many summers at the camp he built on the Great Sacandaga Lake.
Above all else, Victor's greatest passion in life was his family; he was a devoted father, a proud grandfather and great-grandfather. One of his most memorable skills was his ability to tie weaver's knots, which he shared with his grandchildren at family gatherings.
Besides his parents and wife, he was predeceased by his brothers, James, Arthur, George and William DeGolyer; and his sisters, Frances Jackson and Jeannette Hanna.
He is survived by his children, Cynthia L. DeGolyer of Johnstown, James L. (Bonnie) DeGolyer of Peru, NY, and Christine A. (Peter) Schoonmaker of Gloversville; grandchildren, Kristina Mason, Heidi Bolebruch and Beth Wanmer; great-grandchildren, Payton, Tobias, Collin, Katherine, Morgan and Ava; one great-great-grandchild, Kaylie; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.
Friends and relatives are invited to call on the family from 4-7 p.m. on Sunday, October 13, 2013, at the Walrath & Stewart Funeral Home, 51 Fremont Street, Gloversville. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. on Monday, October 14, 2013, at the funeral home with the Rev. Christopher Hamm officiating.
