Letter writer did not have facts straight

October 12, 2013
by JEFF BALDWIN , The Leader Herald

This is a rebuttal to the recent letter to the editor, "Tell Republicans in Congress to grow up."

Get your facts straight.

Negotiations? Nancy Pelosi was the speaker of the House at the time Obamacare was voted on and passed, meaning the Democrats had control of the House. Remember, she said, "We [Congress] have to pass the bill [Obamacare] to find out what is in it"? Well, I don't know about Democrats, but when I vote for people, I expect them to know exactly what they are voting on before the voting takes place.

When citizens started learning of the language contained in the bill, we the people (or at least some of us) voted the Republicans in specifically to repeal the bill. So, House Republicans tried to at least delay implementation.

The first attempt was a bill that funded all components of government and delayed Obamacare for one year. Pundits and some supporters felt the law wasn't "ready for prime time" yet. But the Senate (controlled by Democrat Harry Reid) voted along straight party lines to reject the proposal.

The second proposal from the House funded all of government including Obamacare, with the stipulation that exemptions given to big business and unions be eliminated. It also required the taxpayer-funded subsidies to the elected officials and their staffs be eliminated as well. Everyone is to be bound by the law. Sounds pretty fair to me, but apparently, greedy Senate Democrats didn't want to lose a freebie. And isn't it a bit odd? Democrats, being for the working class and all, supporting a big-business exemption? The House vote was supported by 11 Democrats. Again, the Senate defeated the bill with a party-line vote.

Health care is an issue that needs to be looked at. But do you really think it is wise to allow the government to administer your care? They have a proven track record of inefficiency. What happens the next time the Democrats go on another tirade? Will they shut down your health care as a bargaining chip?

And all the while, PBS continues to broadcast.
