Robert W. Boles Sr., 73, passed away Thursday morning at St. Mary's Hospital.
Born in Gloversville, N.Y., on May 11, 1940, the son of the late Neil and Louise Van Alstyne Boles, he moved to the Amsterdam area in 1971. Bob worked as an apprentice jockey in his youth until 1958 at the Sanford Stud Farms. He later was the manager for 20 years at the Montgomery County SPCA. He retired as a security guard for the Amsterdam Housing Authority after 18 years of service. He was of the Roman Catholic faith. On Dec. 23, 1961, he was united in marriage to the former Janet L. Galway. In addition to his wife, he leaves his sons, Robert W. Boles Jr. of Perth and Patrick J. Boles of Amsterdam; his mother-in-law, Gertrude Galway of Indian Orchard, Mass.; brothers, Gerald (Joyce) Boles of Charlotte, N.C., and Kevin (Kim) Boles of Gloversville; sisters, Ellen Morgan, Carolyn (Gerald) Nellis and Louise (Dutch) Wilder, all of Gloversville; his grandchildren, Brandy Lee, Amanda Lyn, Codey and Shawn Boles; great-granddaughter, Norah Elizabeth Morehouse; and nieces, nephews and cousins. He was predeceased by a brother, Neil "Buster"; and sister, Donna Boles.
A prayer service will take place Saturday at 10 a.m. at the Betz, Rossi & Bellinger Family Funeral Home, 171 Guy Park Avenue, with the Rev. O. Robert DeMartinis officiating. Interment will follow in Ferndale Cemetery, Johnstown. Relatives and friends are invited and may call today (Friday) from 4 to 7 p.m. at the funeral home.
