Lawrence Spinak

Lawrence Spinak, 76, of Gloversville, passed away suddenly on Wednesday, October 9, 2013, at his home.

Born on March 3, 1937, in Brooklyn, he was the son of the late Reuben and Hannah (Krupnick) Spinak.

Lawrence was raised in Gloversville. He traveled and went out to see the world, returning to Gloversville after 54 years to enjoy his retirement in the city he loved.

Mr. Spinak served his country in the U.S. Army from 1956 until his honorable discharge in 1959.

He was employed as an electronics instructor for the United States government for many years, retiring in 1987. However, in 1990, Lawrence did take a job as ships radio officer aboard a freighter and sailed from California to China, that was the "highlight" of his working career.

He enjoyed being an Amateur Radio Operator, where he operated as K1CWZ. He also liked photography. Lawrence's greatest passion was whittling, carving works of art out of wood, He enjoyed giving his works to friends as gifts. Lawrence was an active member of Knesseth Israel Synagogue, where he had been Vice President and also cemetery chairperson.

He is survived by two sons, Aaron Spinak and his wife, May of Taiwan and Stephen Spinak of Toms River, N.J.; a sister, Zelda Zeh of Florida; and six grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. on Friday, October 11, 2013, at Knesseth Israel Synagogue, 34 East Fulton Street, Gloversville, with the Rabbi Rose Durbin officiating. Burial will follow at Knesseth Israel Cemetery, Clyde Street, Gloversville.

Arrangements are under the direction of Walrath & Stewart Funeral Home, Gloversville.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Knesseth Israel Synagogue, 34 East Fulton Street, Gloversville, NY 12078.
