John David Barkevich, 77, of Caroga Lake, passed away on Monday evening, October 7, 2013, at his home surrounded by his family following a brief and hard fought battle with cancer.
Born on October 11, 1935, in Amsterdam, he was the son of the late John and Caroline (Kondrat) Barkevich. John was a 1954 graduate of St. Mary's Institute in Amsterdam. He then graduated from Hudson Valley Community College, Troy in 1957 and continued with his education to become a Professional Engineer on March 18, 1971.
He first worked as a superintendent for Peckham Road Corp. in White Plains; he then worked for the New York State Department of Parks and Recreation as a park engineer with the Taconic State Park Commission and an assistant regional administrator with the Genesee State Park Commission. He then took a park engineer position with the NYS Office of Parks, Recreation and Historical Preservation at the main office in Albany and in 1995 he retired from the NYS Thruway Authority in Albany as a bridge inspector. Even in his retirement, John continued to perform engineering consulting.
Mr. Barkevich also served his country in the U.S. Army Reserves.
He was past chairman of the Gloversville Recreation Commission, and was instrumental in the creation of the Gloversville Rail Trail. John was a lifetime member of the Concordia Club, a member of the Moose Club, the American Society of Civil Engineers and the NYS Society of Professional Engineers.
John was married to Beverly S. Brown on February 7, 1959.
John and Beverly enjoyed 32 summers at Caroga Lake, eventually retiring there as their permanent residence in 2000, He loved his Caroga Lake home and friends there, where he was able to spend his last days. The past 14 years he wintered in Sebastian, FL. John and Beverly enjoyed traveling, including trips to the Florida Keys and the Caribbean where he enjoyed boating, fishing and SCUBA diving. One of John's greatest passions was supporting his family; he loved following his children in their sporting endeavors.
Mr. Barkevich had a great love for and enjoyed the companionship of his dogs, George and Fitch and grand dogs, Boe, Bear and Ronnie.
John was predeceased by his son, Alan E. Barkevich and a brother, David Barkevich.
Besides his wife, he is survived by his children: Susan S. (Danny) Forte of Bethlehem, Sally A. (Chris) Cram of Caroga Lake and Bruce J. (Sheila) Barkevich of Clifton Park; grandchildren: Kelly, Tommy and Michael Barkevich all of Clifton Park; siblings: Joan (Norm) Knapik of Amsterdam and Jim (Roberta) Barkevich of Amsterdam; in-laws: Barbara (Gene) Satterlee of Gloversville and Christine Barkevich of Amsterdam; and many nieces, nephews and cousins.
Friends and relatives are invited to call on the family from 4-7pm on Thursday, October 10, 2013, at their home, located at 318 South Shore Road, West Caroga Lake, where a Celebration of Life will commence at 6:00 PM.
