Project ACTION Tobacco-Free Coalition in Hamilton, Fulton, and Montgomery counties educates community leaders and the community about store tobacco product displays, tobacco marketing in stores, pharmacies, and grocery stores about ending tobacco marketing in stores.
According to a surgeon general report, studies show a 10 percent increase in the price of cigarettes causes a 3 to 5 percent decrease in purchases among adults, and youth are even more price sensitive. Tobacco companies have crafted price-related strategies to combat quitting and entice new customers to purchase their products.
Coupons and value-added sales are strategies that focus on vulnerable populations. In the industry, price manipulation targets price-sensitive populations that include youth, low-income, and heavy smokers. Youth smoking is still a problem in New York and tobacco usage is the nation's leading cause of preventable death.
