October 1, 2013
The Leader Herald

Gweneth Leighton Bach, 82, of Ellsworth, Maine, passed away suddenly but peacefully on September 20, 2013, at Eastern Maine Medical Center in Bangor, Maine. She was born April 27, 1931, in Pittsfield, Maine, daughter of Percy Leighton and Esther Tucker Leighton.

Gweneth spent the first seven years of her life on a farm in rural Cambridge, Maine. After her mother passed away and the Great Depression ended, Gweneth moved with her father and sister to East Corinth where her father opened a general store. There she found a lifelong friend in the daughter of the general store owner across the road. Gweneth graduated from East Corinth Academy in the class of 1949. She graduated from Farmington State Teachers College in Farmington, Maine in 1953. She married Kenneth W. Bach of Otway, Ohio on March 28, 1954. Immediately after their marriage they traveled to Darmstadt, Germany where Mr. Bach continued his service in the United States Air Force. Upon returning from Germany she worked for Monsanto Corp. in Dayton, Ohio. Later she taught home economics at Garland Street Junior High School in Bangor, Maine. She lived in Clarksburg, Maryland for many years, followed by extended residence in Amsterdam, New York. For many years she served as a volunteer at historic Old Fort Johnson in Fort Johnson, New York. She also volunteered extensively at the Amsterdam Free Library in Amsterdam, New York. Gweneth enjoyed traveling, sewing, quilting, gardening and was an avid reader of everything from novels and mysteries to history and nature. She loved to play games such as Scrabble and watched Jeopardy almost every evening.

Her death closely follows the death of her sister, Margaret Ruth Leighton, who died July 6, 2013. Gweneth is survived by her husband of 59 years, Kenneth W. Bach of Ellsworth, Maine; daughter, the Rev. Gayle E. Bach-Watson and her daughters, Jessica A. Watson and Alexandra M. Watson of Frederick, Maryland; and son, Kevin R. Bach and his wife, Michelle L. Berger, and their sons, Samuel P. Bach, Herschel L. Bach and Charles A. Bach of Surry, Maine. She was a kind hearted soul who will be dearly missed by all who knew her.

According to Gweneth's wishes, we ask that the privacy of the family be respected at this time.

Plans for a memorial gathering and reception will be announced at a later date. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Old Fort Johnson, Montgomery County Historical Society, P.O. Box 196, Fort Johnson, NY 12070; www.oldfortjohnson.org.
