GLOVERSVILLE - Micropolis Cooperative Art Gallery has announced the opening of its fall show, which will feature guest artist Paul Petrie Jr.
A "Meet the Artists" reception to open the show will take place from 5 to 7 p.m. Friday at the gallery, which is inside Mohawk Harvest Cooperative Market, 30 N. Main St.
Petrie, of Gloversville, has been a professional carpenter and woodworker for 30 years. His wood turning began with spindles for job sites, yet his fascination with vessels and after-lathe work has brought his art to a highly creative level, according to a news release from Micropolis.

"The lathe for me has opened a world of exploration into one of nature's wonders, the tree," Petrie says in his artist statement on his website. "The complex combination of structure, grain and texture work together to give the tree life and to produce natural beauty. I try in my way to use shape to expose this beauty and give pleasure to the eye. These shapes are preceded by grain orientation and angle to the rim.
"More recently, I have added various forms of external change to my pieces as well. These forms include painting, piercing, wood burning and added texturing. All of these, I hope, add interest to the piece, yet it still remains a wood object."
His pieces have been featured in the AAW Magazine, Fine Woodworking, Woodturning UK and in a cover article in Woodworking in Action, Issue 16. He has demonstrated at turning clubs and at the Totally Turning Symposium 2009 and 2011.
"Wood is a truly amazing medium and I am pleased to call myself a wood turner," Petrie says.
