GLOVERSVILLE - A city man was charged Sunday after he allegedly stole vials of narcotics from Nathan Littauer Hospital.

Todd G. Plummer, 23, of 69 S. Judson St., was charged by city police with third-degree criminal mischief, fifth-degree criminal possession of stolen property and petit larceny.

According to police Capt. John Sira, Plummer was visiting a woman who gave birth in the hospital's maternity ward and somehow got access to the maternity ward's surgery room. Sira said Plummer found a sharps container inside an anesthesiologist cart after opening the lock to the cart.

Sira said Plummer took the container into a bathroom and removed several vials of various narcotics.

"Morphine was one of them," Sira said. "We really don't have an exact amount of what was stolen."

Hospital security found the sharps container and empty vials in the bathroom garbage can and notified police, Sira said.

Sira said Plummer returned to the hospital later and was charged. Police said he was still in possession of narcotics, which were found on him, and in his car and apartment.

Cheryl McGrattan, a spokeswoman for Nathan Littauer, said the vials would not have contained any significant amount of narcotics.

According to McGrattan, whenever a vial is used, the remaining contents are disposed of before they are placed in the sharps container. The vials would have been empty, other than for residual amounts, she said.

"We have wonderful compliance on making sure we render all unused drugs [unrecoverable]," McGrattan said.

She declined further comment about the case.

Sira said vials had medication in them.

Plummer was arraigned in City Court, where his bail was set at $20,000 cash. He was remanded to Fulton County Jail.
