Mayfield business looks to expand

September 23, 2013
By MICHAEL ANICH , The Leader Herald

JOHNSTOWN - The Fulton County Planning Board recently remained neutral on a site plan for a business expansion in the town of Mayfield.

The board saw no regional implications for the project application from the Mayfield Town Planning Board it reviewed at the Fort Johnstown Annex last week. The review was part of the board's state General Municipal Law requirements.

County Senior Planner Sean Geraghty said John Compani wants to expand his existing canvas-upholstery business along Woods Hollow Road. He said Compani is proposing a 760-square-foot addition to a building on his property.

Geraghty said Compani previously received an area variance from the Mayfield Town Zoning Board of Appeals to expand his operation.

"Some of his stuff is outdoors right now," Geraghty said. "His business is kind of booming."

Training scheduled

In other business, Geraghty reported this year's fall planning training sessions will be conducted from 5 to 9 p.m. Thursday at Fulton-Montgomery Community College. He said topics this year will include "Revised Zoning Regulations" and "Smart Growth."

County Planning Director James Mraz also shared with the board his thoughts on the recent two-day visit to Fulton and Montgomery counties by international site selector Michael Mullis. He said local economic development agencies and National Grid brought him here to independently evaluate the area's strengths and weaknesses.

"He said develop a plan and stick with it," Mraz said. "All in all, we thought Mr. Mullis' time here was outstanding."

Mraz said Mullis suggested a mitigation plan for area wetlands. Mullis also visited the former Tryon Detention Center, which Fulton County is trying to obtain from the state and turn into a technology park. Mraz said Mullis suggested a regional business training center there.

He said Mullis felt Tryon was "one of the finest facilities" he had ever seen - a site with "tremendous potential."
