Sewer board awards bid

September 16, 2013
By MICHAEL ANICH , The Leader Herald

JOHNSTOWN - The Gloversville-Johnstown Joint Sewer Board recently awarded a $435,000 bid to a Schenectady firm for the first phase of improvement and replacement work on the sewage treatment plant's main sewer pipeline.

The board awarded the bid to Precision Industrial Maintenance Inc.

The company will do work on the Gloversville-Johnstown Wastewater Treatment Facility's 50-year-old main trunk line between the two cities. The line runs four miles from Harrison Street in Gloversville to the sewage treatment plant on Union Avenue in Johnstown.

C.T. Male Associates' engineers in October said the overall project may cost about $4.4 million.

Sewer officials are doing the main sewer pipeline project as a capital project.

Facility Wastewater Engineer Tyler Masick said three bids were received for initial work on the trunk line and Precision Industrial Maintenance Inc. was the low bidder. He said the other bidders were: Arnold Construction Co. -$662,375 and National Water Main Cleaning -$795,000.

Masick said C.T. Male Associates reviewed bids and recommended awarding the bid to Precision Industrial Maintenance Inc.

"We've done some work with them," C.T. Male engineer Chad Kortz told the board.

Kortz said he checked some of the references and they came back good for the company's lining and other related work.

"They looked at the project very closely," Kortz said of Precision Industrial Maintenance Inc. "They seem to be acceptable. They're pretty used to this type of work."

He said the company has done work in this area before.

An inspection by C.T. Male found debris and grit in the flow channel, cracked pipes and some significant obstructions that restrict sewer flow. Officials said there was a buildup of material actually attached to the reinforced concrete pipe. The engineering firm identified 10 projects that should be looked at over the next several years.
