Braves breeze past Blackbirds, 49-12

FONDA - Russ Williams threw for three touchdowns and ran for one more, sparking Fonda-Fultonville to a 49-12 opening-day victory over the Voorheesville Blackbirds on Saturday in a Class C South Division football game at John G. Boshart Field in Fonda.

After a three and out for Voorheesville to open the game, Fonda-Fultonville called their first offensive play of the season in memory of former Fonda-Fultonville coach and educator John West, who passed away in May. The draw play, entitled "zero one West," ended up with running back Pat Hart scampering down the field for a 61-yard touchdown to put the Braves up 6-0.

"We scripted it," said Fonda-Fultonville head coach Tom Carpenter. "We were going to run it then and we told the kids that. I was hoping that we would get a big play out of it and the ultimate would be to score a touchdown."

The success proved to be the start of a rout in Fonda. After putting two points on the board with a safety, Hart ran back the ensuing punt 70 yards for a touchdown, giving the Braves an early 15-0 advantage.

After some back-and-forth action in the second quarter that saw neither team put points on the board, Voorheesville registered their first score of the game when quarterback Robert Denman hit Scott Roney for a 26 yard touchdown. On the following possession, with just 45 seconds left in the half, Fonda-Fultonville's Williams tossed his first touchdown pass of the game to Brandon Baker. Williams found Cam Ives to convert the two-point conversion, giving Fonda-Fultonville a 23-6 lead heading into the halftime break.

Cramps plagued the Braves late in the first half, including Hart who was down on the field and receiving treatment before limping over to the sidelines. The issue would not affect the Braves too much, however, as they used a huge third quarter to put further distance between them and the Blackbirds.

The Braves steadily fed the ball to Anthony Sinicropi on their first possession of the half. Williams once again found Baker for a 20 yard score to complete a nine play, 70 yard drive. Denman tossed his first of two interceptions on Voorheesville's next drive, which was returned 30 yards by Josh Maybury for a score that put the Braves up 36-6.

"Since I've been coaching here we've always talked about important times of the game, and no matter what the score is it's a new half, so that's a very important time of the game," said Carpenter.

After a near-50 yard punt return by Baker late in the quarter, the Braves extended their lead when tight end Will Turner went up for a jump ball in the end zone and came down with the 7-yard pass from Williams to make it 43-6.

Williams added a 1-yard rushing touchdown in the fourth before Fonda-Fultonville's backups got some playing time late in the quarter.

Voorheesville killed most of the time in the fourth with a 12 play drive that lasted nearly eight minutes and culminated with a touchdown run by Collin Patterson. With Sinicropi in at quarterback, the Braves ran out the remainder of the clock to finish off a 49-12 thrashing of the Blackbirds.

"I think overall, we did a good job throwing the ball and running the ball," said Carpenter. "For week one I was really happy with the enthusiasm, the excitement, and I thought he kids played hard."

Baker added an interception to go along with his two touchdown receptions and long punt return for Fonda-Fultonville.

The Braves' next contest will be at Taconic Hills on Friday at 7 p.m.
