Wandering a serious issue

August 13, 2013
The Leader Herald

The tragic death in July of a Schenectady resident with Alzheimer's disease underscores a symptom of this disease that family members may not think about - wandering. The fact is more than 60 percent of those with dementia will wander at some point. "Wandering" may not sound dangerous, but a person with Alzheimer's often cannot remember his or her name or address, and can become disoriented, even in familiar places. If not found quickly, the person who wandered is at grave risk of injury or death.
