RICHMOND, Va. - Erica Askew of Johnstown and Bailey Smith of Fort Plain competed in the Eastern Zone Long Course Age Group Championship at the Collegiate School Aquatics Center (which houses the 2008 U.S. Olympic Trials pool) in Richmond, Va., from Aug. 7-10.
Askew, a senior at Johnstown High School, who swims for the Albany Starfish Swim Club was the Eastern Zone Champion in the 15- to 18-year-old girls 100-meter breaststroke with a time of 1:16.96.
Bailey Smith, an eighth-grader at Canajoharie Middle School, swims for the Schenectady-Saratoga Sharks Swim Club, was the Eastern Zone Champion in the 13- and 14-year-old girls 200-meter butterfly with a time of 2:24.65.

Askew and Smith were selected for the Adirondack team based on qualifying times achieved at USA Sanctioned Long Course swim meets during the 2013 season. Swimmers must possess a minimum of "AA" times in the events they competed in and compete in the Adirondack Long Course Championships. Askew and Smith swam in four individual events as well as relays at the Eastern Zone Championship.
The Eastern Zone consists of 12 teams including Adirondack, Allegheny Mountain, Connecticut, Maryland, Maine, Metropolitan, Middle Atlantic, New England, New Jersey, Niagara, Potomac Valley and Virginia.
The Eastern, Southern, Central and Western Zones conduct all-star competitions for teams within their zones.
