JOHNSTOWN - A town of Johnstown motorist charged in May 2012 with drug and weapons possession counts after his pickup truck knocked down a telephone pole was sentenced Wednesday to one year in the Fulton County Jail.

William F. Sawyer, 51, of 813 N. Bush Road, was sentenced in Fulton County Court by Judge Richard C. Giardino.

Sentencing was based on his May 7 guilty plea. He was sentenced - as part of a plea arrangement - to one year in the county jail on a charge of driving while ability impaired by drugs. He also received a six-month sentence - to be served concurrently - for his guilty plea to one count of misdemeanor fourth-degree criminal possession of a weapon.

He had been indicted on those counts by a county grand jury on Aug. 15, 2012.

Sawyer was charged May 24, 2012, by Fulton County sheriff's deputies after an accident with his pickup truck at 10:55 p.m. on Route 10, south of Capehorn Road-South End. Deputies said at the time he was in possession of a shotgun and was a convicted felon. At the time, he was also charged with failure to keep right and unlawful possession of marijuana, both violations.

Deputies said Sawyer was heading south on Route 10 when he fell asleep. His truck crossed over the northbound lane and went off the road and onto an earth embankment. The vehicle traveled down the embankment and struck a telephone pole, shearing it off, deputies said. The truck went back on the road and it continued south a half-mile before Sawyer turned around at the intersection with Route 10A and traveled back to where the accident started, deputies said.

Sex charge leads to prison term

In another court case Wednesday, a Caroga Lake man accused last spring of having sexual contact with a male younger than age 17 was sentenced to 2 1/2 years in state prison.

Louis (Joe) Romano Jr., 48, of 147 Second Ave., was sentenced by Giardino to the prison term.

The sentence was based on the defendant's Oct. 12 guilty plea to felony third-degree criminal sexual act.

Romano was arrested by Fulton County sheriff's deputies May 24, accused of underage sex with a male. Deputies said he was charged after turning himself in to the Sheriff's Department.
