Johnstown board OKs self-storage business expansion

JOHNSTOWN - The city Planning Board approved a self-storage business expansion project Tuesday at City Hall.

The board approved a new 65-unit, climate-controlled building on the property of City Line Self Storage Inc., of 580 N. Perry St. No one spoke at a public hearing on City Line's application that was conducted by the board.

City Line co-owner Ed Bradley told the board he will have 65 additional storage bins installed. The expansion is unique in that some of the new units will be climate-controlled.

"There's about a 50-50 mix," Bradley said.

Following approval of his application, he told city Fire Chief Bruce Heberer he will be stopping into his department to obtain final permits.

Brian Hanaburgh, the other co-owner of the business, told the board July 2 the additional self-storage building will be on a remaining 19,000-square-foot undeveloped lot. City Line Self Storage's existing 87,000-square-foot parcel is perpendicular to North Perry Street, running along the south side of Snyder Avenue.

Hanaburgh and Bradley explained the new building will be 45- by 120-feet and similar in design and colors to the existing blue buildings. But this building will be different because of the half heated units and half cold storage units, they said.

According to the project narrative, to accommodate the heated storage spaces, heating-ventilation-air conditioning units will be placed at each end of the building to control the climate. The interior heated units will be built to meet existing energy codes and heated by propane-fueled furnaces.

Hanaburgh said self-storage customers increasingly want valuable goods protected in a climate-controlled environment.
