JOHNSTOWN - Fulton Montgomery Regional Chamber of Commerce officials said this week they are encouraged that traveler spending in Fulton County increased by 1.4 percent from 2011 to 2012.

The state Division of Tourism released a statewide economic data report for all counties for last year. Chamber officials presented a report on traveler spending for the six-county Capital-Saratoga Region to the Fulton County Board of Supervisors' Economic Development and Environment Committee on Tuesday.

Chamber Director of Tourism Gina DaBiere-Gibbs said traveler spending in Fulton County increased from $48.8 million in 2011 to $49.5 million in 2012. She said the local spending figures break down as follows: lodging, $6 million; recreation, $730,000; food and beverages, $8.2 million; retail and service stations, $5.6 million; transport, $774,00; and second homes, $28.2 million.

Overall in the Capital-Saratoga Region, traveler spending increased by 3.8 percent, from $1.63 billion to $1.69 billion. The biggest increase was 9.5 percent, in Saratoga County.

DaBiere-Gibbs quoted the report, which stated: "The recovery of New York state's tourism economy continued to expand in 2012 - growing 6.2 percent after an 8.3 percent expansion in 2011. As a result, traveler spending reached a new high of $57.3 billion."

Elsewhere in her report, DaBiere-Gibbs mentioned two upcoming chamber events:

- The chamber's 19th annual $10,000 "Bet on Fulton County" Raffle will be conducted Friday at a poolside party at the Holiday Inn. The event is a fundraiser for tourism, and tickets cost $100. Only 300 tickets will be sold. Tickets can be purchased at the chamber's Gloversville office or at the Holiday Inn or Partners' Pub in Johnstown.

-?The Bassmaster Weekend Series fishing tournament series will take place Aug. 17 on the Great Sacandaga Lake. Past Bassmaster tournaments have brought 120 finishing enthusiasts to Fulton County for the day.
