Fulton County filling vacant jobs

JOHNSTOWN - The Fulton County Board of Supervisors' Finance Committee on Thursday filled several vacant positions throughout county government, including two vacant deputy positions in the Sheriff's Department.

Sheriff Thomas Lorey requested and received permission to fill one permanent deputy position and one temporary deputy position.

He told supervisors a deputy recently resigned, and he will fill the position through a lateral transfer or from an active list. He also said he has one deputy out on injury and he would like to fill it on a temporary basis.

"A temporary position can only be filled for six months because of civil service law," Lorey said.

In other personnel matters, the committee approved filling nine vacant positions in the county Department of Social Services. They are: one case supervisor, one senior caseworker, one temporary caseworker, four typists, one temporary social welfare examiner, and one permanent caseworker.

DSS Commissioner Sheryda Cooper said the filling of the Child Protective Unit case supervisor - in anticipation of a resignation - sets off a chain of promotions. She said an existing temporary senior caseworker will be promoted into the $42,167 case supervisor position. Cooper said. A temporary caseworker position will then be promoted to the temporary senior caseworker position.

The committee approved filling a vacant $26,108-per-year typist position at the county Office for Aging on North William Street. Typist Dawn Platt is resigning Aug. 23. The position is a key one in the agency's Accounting-Clerical Unit, said OFA Director Andrea Fettinger.

"She pretty much does all the reception work down there," said county Administrative Officer Jon Stead.

The OFA office has taken on duties for the Veterans' Service Agency and county Youth Bureau in recent years.

Supervisors also approved a proposed resolution to go before the full board Aug. 12 creating an account clerk-legal typist position and abolishing a legal typist position in the county Probation Department.
