FORT PLAIN - A homeless man was charged by village police with rape, endangering the welfare of a child and other crimes, according to a news release.
David Dennis, 30, was charged with second-degree criminal sexual act, second-degree rape, second-degree burglary and endangering the welfare of a child.
Village police said Dennis was charged after information gained during an investigation showed he had sexual conduct with a 14-year-old girl on a repeated basis, in and around the village.
Dennis broke into an unoccupied residence in the village to have contact with the victim, police said.
Dennis was arrested after attempting to gain access to the Red Cross Flood Relief Shelter at the Harry Hoag Elementary School, police said. Dennis allegedly said he did not have to report he was a registered sex offender, police said, when in fact he was.
Dennis was arraigned and sent to the county jail.
