BENSON - Former U.S. Olympic cross-country skier Olavi Hirvonen built the Lapland Lake resort in 1978. After 35 years, Hirvonen said, he's ready to retire.

Hirvonen has put the resort up for sale and is seeking $1.4 million for it.

Hirvonen opened the Lapland Lake Nordic Vacation Center in December 1978.

"It had been a dream for many years," said Hirvonen.

The property is 230 acres in the Adirondack mountains on Woods Lake with 14 different trails designed by Hirvonen for cross-country skiing and snowshoeing. Guests also have access to Woods Lake with a private beach.

There are 10 Adirondack Rental Cabins that guests can lodge in on the resort. Hirvonen turned the old barn on the property into the offices and a retail shop. Upstairs there is a snack bar and lounge area. During the winter season, guests also can use the restaurant on the property.

Olavi and his wife, Ann Hirvonen, said they hope whoever buys the resort will care for and love it as they do.

"It's a special, special place," said Ann.

Along with selling the resort, the couple also is selling nine residential developer building lots on the property. They have sold lots before to some of their clientele. There are 12 homes built on the property already.

However, it's the first time these lots are being marketed to the public.

Christian Kleug, the real estate agent for the residential lots, referred to the lots and the resort as a hidden treasure.

"It's a unique place; you're secluded but not isolated," Kleug said.
