County needs new server

July 8, 2013

JOHNSTOWN - Fulton County government needs more server space.

County Information Services Director Perry Lovell recently told the Board of Supervisors' Finance Committee he wants to purchase a $12,556 Storage Area Network, which is a large file server, as well as software. He planned for the purchase to be a 2014 county capital request but now needs the equipment this year.

"We are filling up our existing server disks faster than planned," Lovell said.

Beginning this month, he said, former county Mental Health Department documents will be archived into an image-scanning system purchased last year, which will contribute to the county's increase in disk usage.

"We're doing a lot more than we thought we were going to be doing," Lovell said.

He said as the county evaluates new software and upgrades existing systems, the county is creating additional virtual servers to handle the work. The Fulton County Information Services Department also is proposing nearly $600,000 in capital improvements for 2014 to county government's computer, digital and wireless services.

With the upcoming large project, he told the Finance Committee: "I anticipate being extremely busy after the turn of the year. Purchasing and installing this new [SAN] system over the summer would not only relieve the pressure on our current disk space, it would also help to spread some of the work load that will be coming in the near future."

The committee approved a proposed a resolution for today's board meeting to purchase the new server system.

County Budget Director Alice Kuntzsch said there may be leftover federal mental health funds, or leftover capital funds from the county's centralized storage room project, to pay for the new system.
