Herbert "Herb" C. Frank Jr., 79, of Yates Road, Mayfield, N.Y., died Tuesday afternoon, July 2, 2013, at St. Mary's Hospital in Amsterdam following a lengthy illness, with his loving family at his side.
He was born August 17, 1933, in Amsterdam, N.Y., the son of Herbert and Mary Zwierecki Frank Sr. Upon graduating from Wilbur H. Lynch High School, Amsterdam in 1951, he entered the United States Marine Corps from which he was honorably discharged on July 11, 1954, after serving in the Korean War. He worked for the former Thomas Rapello Photo Shop before entering the Amsterdam Police Department where he worked as a patrolman until his acceptance to the ranks of the New York State Police in 1962, serving as a trooper in Troops B and G. In addition to his road duties, he was a member of the N.Y.S.P. Pistol Team. His knowledge and proficiency with firearms led him to serve as a firearms instructor for Troop G. He was later promoted to the position of Assistant Firearms Director at the New York State Police Academy in Albany, N.Y. He retired from the N.Y.S.P. in 1980 and then worked for the Security Department of St. Mary's Hospital in Amsterdam, eventually becoming head of the department, retiring in 1992.
He was a communicant of St. Francis of Assisi in Northville, N.Y. Herb was also a member of the Adirondack Detachment 787 Marine Corps League of Northville, N.Y. and the VFW of Broadalbin, N.Y.

He is survived by his wife of 58 years, the former Dorothy Smuk, whom he married October 3, 1954; one son, Herbert C. Frank III (Mary Ann) of Mayfield, N.Y.; one daughter, Cynthia Palleschi (Tullio) of Chittenango, N.Y.; four grandchildren, Craig (Jillian) Palleschi of Landing, N.J., Jennifer (Kevin) Kohl of Liverpool, N.Y., Samantha (Emerson) Morse of Little Falls, N.Y. and Kyle Frank of California; four great-grandchildren, Linken Frank, Madison Morse, Anthony Palleschi and Bradley Kohl.
A Mass of Christian burial will be held on Saturday, July 6, 2013, at 10:30 a.m. at St. Francis of Assisi Parish, 501 Bridge St., Northville, N.Y., with Father Matthew Wetsel as celebrant. Interment will be in Union Rural Cemetery, Mayfield, N.Y., with full military honors. The family will receive relatives and friends on Friday, July 5, 2013, from 4 to 7 p.m. at the Walrath & Stewart Funeral Home, 51 Fremont St., Gloversville, NY 12078.
