Several area spring sports teams earn high school scholar-athlete honors

A total of 16 area spring sports teams were among those honored by the New York State Public High School Athletic Association as scholar-athlete team award winners.

To earn the honors, a team needed to achieve an academic average of 90 or greater in classes during the winter sports season.

This year marks the 22nd year the NYSPHSAA has honored teams with the award.

Amsterdam and Fort Plain led the way with four teams earning scholar-athlete team awards.

Amsterdam's boys tennis team posted a team grade-point average of 97.499, while the girls track and field team recored a 95.085 GPA.

The boys tennis team finished with the fourth-highest GPA in the state among boys tennis teams.

The Amsterdam boys track and field team finished with a 94.990 GPA and the baseball team posted a 90.984 GPA. The Amsterdam boys and girls track and field teams both won Big 10 titles this season, while the boys were second at the Section II Group 2 Championships.

The Fort Plain baseball (92.477), boys track and field (92.953), girls track and field (95.150) and softball (92.867) teams all earned NYSPHSAA scholar-athlete team awards. The Fort Plain baseball team reached the Section II Class C championship game before losing to Voorheesville.

Fonda-Fultonville and Mayfield each had three of their spring sports teams earn scholar-athlete team awards.

The Fonda-Fultonville girls track and field (94.631), boys track and field (94.461) and softball (92.865) teams were honored, while the Mayfield girls track and field (96.863), boys track and field (92.232 and softball (91.969) teams were honored.

The Fonda-Fultonville boys were second at the Section II Group 3 Championships, while the girls were third.

The Mayfield softball team won the Western Athletic Conference North Division title this season.

Also earning scholar-athlete team awards were the Johnstown girls lacrosse (92.100) and softball (90.718) teams.
