Walter Raymond Selufsky passed away peacefully at home on June 13, 2013, surrounded by loving family. He was born on February 11, 1925, in Gloversville, New York, the son of Joseph Selufsky and Edna Opalka Selufsky. After graduating from high school, he served in the Army in Panama during WW II. He married his high school sweetheart, Elaine Salvione, in Los Angeles, California. They had two children, Lorraine and Gary, and were together until Elaine's death in 1976. In 1986 he married Margaret Jeanne Thornburg, happily adding three stepdaughters, Cindy, Jane and Julia, their spouses, children and many other extended family members to his family.
Walt worked for the University of California for forty years, starting in the warehouse and working his way up to management in the Business Department at UCLA; moving to UC Irvine in 1966, retiring as the Contracts and Grants Administrator in 1988. He enjoyed tennis, lawn bowling, gardening, his pets and spending time with his grandchildren. His children and grandchildren have many happy memories of spending time together at Walt and Jeanne's backyard pool. Walt loved to bake and cook, especially his traditional Polish dishes prepared for family gatherings.
He is survived by: his wife, Jeanne; his son and daughter; three stepdaughters; ten grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren. He also is survived by his sister, Helen Dalmata; brother, Ronald Selufsky; and numerous nieces and nephews. Walt had two cherished cats, Bobbie and Sprout, who provided him with great comfort and companionship.
The family would like to extend heartfelt thanks to the devoted caregivers of Hospice of Saddleback Valley. We are especially grateful to Walt's angel, Nana, who provided him with personal loving care. As he wished, Walt's ashes will be scattered at sea in a private family celebration of his life.
