Edward Elmer Lakata

Edward Elmer Lakata, age 55, of Johnstown, passed away on Tuesday, June 25, 2013, from injuries received in a bicycle accident.

He was born on May 18, 1958, in Amsterdam, a son of Elmer K. and Carol Lakata of Johnstown, who survive.

Ed was a graduate of Johnstown High School, Fulton-Montgomery Community College and received his bachelor's degree in electrical engineering from Union College.

He was currently employed with Opto Generic Devices as a design engineer.

Mr. Lakata was a member of the Johnstown Fraternal Order of Eagles (F.O.E.) and also played for local bands, most recently Skyler's Dream Team.

Survivors include his wife, Cynthia Lakata; two sons, Austin Lakata and Karl Lakata, both of Johnstown; five brothers, Johnny Lakata of Johnstown, Tim Lakata of Southwick, Mass., Eric Lakata of San Antonio, Texas, Chris Lakata of Wilkes-Barre, Pa. and Paul Lakata of Caroga Lake; two sisters, Diane Lakata of Palm Desert, Calif. and Shirley Delaney Montague of Norris Point, Newfoundland, Canada; nieces, nephews, cousins; three AFS daughters, and many devoted friends.

Visitation for friends and family will be held today from 5 to 8 p.m. at the A.G. Cole Funeral Home Inc., 215 East Main Street, Johnstown. The F.O.E. will conduct a ritual at 7 p.m. during the visitation hours.

A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated on Friday at 9:30 a.m. at the Holy Trinity Church, Glebe Street, Johnstown.

Cremation will be at Vale Crematory, Schenectady. Interment will take place at a later date, at the convenience of the family.

In lieu of flowers, the family has started a scholarship fund in his name. Contributions may be made in his memory to the Edward Lakata Memorial Scholarship Fund, c/o Fulton County F.C.U., 355 Hales Mills Road, P.O. Box 232, Gloversville, New York 12078. The scholarship will be awarded to JHS graduates pursuing careers in math and science.
