Mrs. Carmita Rankie Smith Folensbee, 93, of Upper Market Street, Amsterdam, passed away Sunday, June 23, 2013, at St. Mary's Hospital with her loving family at her side.
Born in Amsterdam, N.Y., on September 27, 1919, a daughter of the late James L. and Jessie Dimick Rankie. She lived in Amsterdam until moving to Michigan in 1993, moving back to this area in 1995. Carmita was a graduate of the former Wilbur H. Lynch High School, Class of 1937. She went on to receive her business degree from the former Amsterdam School of Commerce in 1939.
Carmita worked for over 32 years as a secretary at the General Electric Co. in Schenectady, retiring in 1979. She also worked for many years as a waitress at the former Tower Inn Restaurant in Cranesville, N.Y. Mrs. Folensbee also was an Avon representative for many years, serving the greater Amsterdam area. Most important to her was serving the Lord and her church. Mrs. Folensbee was a devoted member of the Cranesville Reformed Church, where she served in many capacities. She was the church secretary for many years and was the church organist and member of the church choir along with teaching Sunday School. Carmita was also a charter member of the Country Cousins Seniors and a charter member of the Rugmakers Riding Club. She was also a member of the Montgomery County 4H and the Cranesville Reformed Church Players. Mrs. Folensbee also enjoyed wintering in Sebring, Florida for many seasons.
Carmita first married Fahey Smith; he passed away on September 23, 1971. She later married Bradley Folensbee, who passed away in 1990.
Survivors include her three dear sons, Charles Smith (Michol) of Perth, N.Y., Donald Smith (Patricia) of Fort Myers, Florida and Robert Smith (Vicki) of Amsterdam, N.Y.; three stepchildren, Robert Folensbee of Moosic, Pa., Kathleen Ketterer of Huntington Beach, Calif. and Charles Folensbee of Saratoga, N.Y. Ten cherished grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren also survive.
Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, June 26, 2013, at 11 a.m. at the Cranesville Reformed Church, 105 Cranes Hollow Road, Amsterdam, NY, with the Rev. Don Heckler presiding. Interment will follow in Evergreen Cemetery, Fonda, N.Y. The family will receive relatives and friends on Wednesday, June 26, 2013, from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. prior to the funeral service at the Cranesville Reformed Church.
