Local athletes compete at national meet

GREENSBORO, N.C. - Five local track and field athletes took part in the New Balance Nationals Outdoor championships Friday, Saturday and Sunday at North Carolina A&T University.

Gloversville High School junior Chanel Thomas represented the Gloversville Track Club in the girls heptathlon, while Amsterdam's Izaiah Brown represented the Amsterdam Track Club in the 400-meter dash.

Brown, a sophomore, teamed with seniors Brett Stanavich, John Hardies and Anthony Stewart in the 1,600-meter relay.

Thomas, the Section II Division I pentathlon champion, placed 17th overall in the heptathlon with 3,753 points.

The heptathlon consists of seven events, the 100-meter hurdles, high jump, shot put, 200-meter dash, long jump, javelin throw and 800-meter run.

Brown placed ninth overall in the 400-meter dash with a time of 47.69. Michael Cherry, a senior from Chesapeake, Va., won the event with a time of 46.06.

The Rams' 1,600-meter relay team placed seventh in its heat race with a time of 3:20.84, which placed them 10th overall.

Western Branch Track Club of Virginia won the event with a time of 3:11.09.
