County honors auxiliary

JOHNSTOWN - Fulton County this week honored volunteers of the former county Residential Health Care Facility, which was sold to a private company last year.

The Board of Supervisors on Monday read a proclamation signed by Chairman William Waldron at its meeting. The proclamation - read by Caroga Supervisor Ralph Ottuso - honored the former Fulton County Residential Health Care Facility Auxiliary.

The county sold its former 176-bed nursing home on County Highway 122 for $3.5 million to Bronx-based Centers for Specialty Care in March 2012. It is now known as the Fulton Center for Rehabilitation and Healthcare. The county said the move was to strengthen the county's financial footing. The sale process, overseen by the state Department of Health, took more than two years.

Ottuso noted the former infirmary was "graciously supported by a dedicated auxiliary of volunteers from the early 1970s until 2012." The board offered its "sincerest appreciation" to the past auxiliary.

"The auxiliary was composed of many, many caring individuals who donated countless hours of their time to offer loving care and compassion to residents of the RHCF," the proclamation stated.

The proclamation noted infirmary auxiliary members raised money, preparing holiday gifts and sponsored entertainment and other special events at the facility. The auxiliary also helped purchase a transport van for residents' trips and appointments, a patio swing, an outdoor pavilion, televisions, furniture, outdoor equipment, computers, games, musical instruments and magazine subscriptions.

Accomplishments of the auxiliary resulted in "an incalculable number of joyous moments" for seniors, caregivers and others at the facility, the proclamation said.

Waldron told the board a county plaque honoring the auxiliary will be presented to the current nursing home.

Ottuso added that a sign recognizing the auxiliary will be mounted to the pavilion.
