Johnstown school board OKs new CSA contract

June 13, 2013
The Leader Herald

JOHNSTOWN - The Greater Johnstown School District Board of Education on Wednesday approved a new four-year contract with the district's 120-member Civil Service Employees Association unit, but the deal isn't final yet.

Board President Paul VanDenburgh said today the union must still approve the contract, and he couldn't provide more details about the contract. VanDenburgh said he believes the union meets Monday.

The CSEA's current four-year contract ratified by the board in October 2011 is due to expire June 30. That contract carried average salary increases of 2.5 percent per year.

On the agenda of the board's special meeting Wednesday night at Johnstown High School was approval of a memorandum of agreement with the CSEA, effective July 1, 2013 through June 30, 2017. Approval came after an executive session to discuss negotiations.

The union represents district personnel that include custodians, buildings and grounds workers, bus drivers, office and secretarial staff, teachers aides and food service workers.

VanDenburgh said negotiations with the CSEA unit went smoothly.

"We settled in just three meetings," he said. "It has been very respectful through the whole process."
