Rose tapped for trustee spot at FM

FONDA - The Montgomery?County Board of Supervisors' Education/Government Committee passed a motion at its meeting?Tuesday to fill a vacancy on the Board of Trustees at Fulton-Montgomery Community College.

Kenneth Rose was appointed as a trustee of the college for a seven-year term, commencing on July 1 and ending on June 30, 2020.

Rose - the chief executive officer of the Montgomery?County Business Development?Center - said he was asked by the Board of Supervisors if he would serve as a trustee.

"I felt that it would obviously be a great opportunity to sit on the board, especially with the current initiatives we have underway between the Fulton County Center for Regional Growth and our office in relation to linking businesses with education," he said.

The committee also passed a motion for the 2013 operating budget authorizing the County Treasurer to amend $4,000 for the Board of Elections.

The money is required because the voter registration cards are required by law to increase in size, officials said. That increases the amount of postage necessary to send out about 26,000 cards to county residents.

Also on Tuesday, the Public Safety Committee could not come to a decision regarding the Montgomery?County Jail's law library and the necessity of hiring a law clerk.

The committee decided to talk about the situation at its next meeting.

Sheriff Michael Amato spoke about how the state requires a law library for all of the inmates.

The inmates have a computer system that gives them access to law information. The computer system for the inmates costs $4,000, Amato said.

Amato said if an inmate requests information that is not in the law library, then an official is required to retrieve the information in a timely manner. If the official doesn't retrieve the information quickly enough, he said, a grievance can be filed.

There are only five or six cases a year that require an inmate to obtain information outside of the law library, Amato said.

Amato was proposing either the county hire and pay for an attorney, or law clerks when they are needed.

Officials said an attorney would cost $75 to $100 per hour, while a law clerk would cost about $12 per hour.

Supervisors at the meeting agreed because inmates rarely request information outside the law library, a law clerk would be a better choice.
