JOHNSTOWN - Fulton-Montgomery Regional Chamber of Commerce officials are hoping an Adirondack outdoors event next month in Hamilton County also will attract visitors to their areas.

Chamber Director of Tourism Gina DaBiere-Gibbs noted last week the Governor's Adirondack Challenge Festival is set for July 21 in the town of Indian Lake. She said many people may travel through the Fulton County area to get there.

"We expect people coming through the weekend of July 19-21," DaBiere-Gibbs said. "Hopefully, we'll get some of that traffic."

DaBiere-Gibbs reported on the event to the Fulton County Board of Supervisors' Economic Development and Environment Committee at the County Office Building.

According to a website sponsored by the state's I Love N.Y. Program and the Hamilton County Department of Economic Development & Tourism, "whitewater thrills, scenic lakes, music, food, wildlife and crafts will come together," culminating in the Governor's Adirondack Challenge on July 21. An entire week of runup events throughout the Adirondack Park will start July 12.

Events will include the Adirondack Whitewater Challenge and Pro-Am flat water canoe race.

Byron Park in Indian Lake will be the center of activities on July 21, the site says. Other attractions will include: continuous music, including the Stony Creek Band; local foods and artisan stalls, panning for garnets, wildlife demonstrations and Adirondack guides.

Other higlights of DaBiere-Gibbs' report to supervisors included:

The chamber's tourism department put together 1,000 "goody bags" filled with business information and brochures and distributed them before Memorial Day to seasonal campground visitors and tourism properties throughout the region. DaBiere-Gibbs said Fulton County's seasonal visitors are important for local businesses, being here most of the summer and looking for things to do and places to shop.

Tickets are on sale for the 19th Annual $10,000 "Bet on Fulton County" Raffle to benefit Fulton County tourism efforts.

The drawing is Aug. 9 at a poolside party at the Holiday Inn. DaBiere-Gibbs said $100 tickets can be purchased at the chamber office in Gloversville, Holiday Inn and Partner's Pub in Johnstown. Only 300 tickets will be sold.

The 4th Annual Peck's Lake Sprint Triathlon is planned for Aug. 3. DaBiere-Gibbs said the event's registration form is online at www.fultonmontgomeryny.org. To date, she said the chamber has received 28 registrations. A portion of proceeds will be donated to the Boys & Girls Club of Gloversville.
