Open eyes to see animals not dangerous

June 6, 2013
The Leader Herald

Regarding Steve Salton and his tigers and leopards, I went to see these beautiful animals for myself. They acted very content with no desire to escape. Why would they when they have a caretaker who takes such good care of them and loves them so much?

I took pictures of these animals and felt very comfortable around them. They made no attempt to lunge at their enclosures to attack me. Steve has their enclosures set back on his property so the animals are not even visible from the road.

These animals were certainly no threat to Steve when they came up to the cage fence to be petted. In fact, the black leopard enjoyed it so much, she purred like a kitten.

Not once did any of them act vicious. You don't have to worry about these animals picking up a gun, killing 20 5- and 6-year-old children and six adults at once (Sandy Hook), or packing up a pressure cooker with a bomb, killing a 9-year-old boy, two other people and severly injuring many more (Boston marathon).

I don't understand why the Mayfield Town Board and the gentleman who can't sell his house are giving Steve such a hard time. The animals have caused no harm to anyone. I am sure you would feel hurt too if you were told that you could no longer keep your animals that you love so much. Why don't you make an appointment to see for yourself how mild-tempered and secure they are?

Steve has had these animals since 2007 - Russell Builders built three homes in this neighborhood, one in 2004, one in 2006 and one in 2007. It appears he had no problem selling two of them. Only one remains to be sold.

I would go there again and again to see these animals. In fact, I would love to live right next door - then I could see them more often.

If we could all simply stop and smell the roses, open our eyes and take a look at how "undangerous" and beautiful these animals are, perhaps we could live together in peace and harmony.
