Failing named WAC North MVP

Fort Plain senior Marcus Failing posted a perfect season on the mound against Western Athletic Conference competition during the Hilltoppers' 2013 WAC?North Division championship season and posted two postseason pitching victories.

For his standout performance, on the mound and in the field, Failing was named the WAC North Division's Most Valuable Player.

Failing went 7-0 in the league and 9-0 overall on the mound for Fort Plain, striking out 106 batters on the season, 86 in the WAC, while walking only 17 batters all year with a 1.04 ERA. At the plate, Failing recorded a .348 batting average with six triples, four doubles and two home runs en route to a .667 slugging percentage.

Failing was joined by South Division's Sean McGarry of Duanesburg and Evan Ottman of Schoharie as WAC MVPs.

Veteran Fort Plain coach Craig Phillips joined his players on the all-star team as he was voted the WAC Coach of the Year.

Also earning first team all-league honors from the Section II Class C runner-up Hilltoppers were senior catcher Zach Sweet; senior pitcher Chris Hanifin senior second baseman Joey Ray and senior outfielder Dakota Nemecek.

Canajoharie senior pitcher Joe Winsman, senior shortstop Zack Bowerman and senior outfielder Kevin Shannon earned North Division honors along with St. Johnsville freshman third baseman Dylan Klock and Mayfield sophomore outfielder Bobby Gates.

Saratoga Catholic pitcher Jake Uline, first baseman Cameron Coons, outfielder Jesse Winters and utility player Ryan Czarnecki and Galway's Sam Uline round out the WAC North Division all-stars.

Mekeel Christian Academy led the WAC South Division with three players being named all-stars.

Pitcher Nick Kelly, first baseman Shawn King and outfielder Scott Voelker earned the honor for he Lions.

Third baseman Kyle Gibbs and outfielder John Lucas earned all-star status for Berne-Knox-Westerlo.

Duanesburg outfielder Henry Holmes, catcher Cody Largeteau and pitcher Gabe Gentile join co-MVP McGarry as South Division all-stars.

Schoharie co-MVP Ottman is joined by teammates Aaron Valvo (pitcher) and second baseman Tanner Stone.

Middleburgh shortstop John Wrigley and designated hitter Taylor Lucas along with Sharon Springs utility player Nick Roach rounded out the South Division all-stars.

North Division
