GLOVERSVILLE - Frontier Communications on Tuesday eliminated 27 unionized positions from its city network operations center and transferred them to Texas, a company spokeswoman said.

"This is not a reflection on the employees or their performance," Frontier spokeswoman Patricia Amendola said Wednesday.

The network operations center is located at 850 Harrison St.

Amendola said the decision by the Stamford. Conn.-based Frontier Communications Corp. still leaves 161 workers at the Gloversville site and 98 employees at Frontier's other area location on South William Street in Johnstown. She said there are about 2,320 Frontier employees in New York state.

The 27 Gloversville workers, Amendola said, did day-to-day communications monitoring. She said the company has been looking at duplication of services and ways to "enhance efficiency."

Amendola said the 27 positions eliminated in Gloversville are being transferred to another Frontier site in Allen, Texas.

Management positions remain at the Gloversville site. The workers affected are part of the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers in Harriman, Orange County.

IBEW spokesman Gil Heim didn't return phone calls this week requesting comment.

Amendola said Frontier is still a thriving telecommunications business.

According to its website, Frontier has a "building management system" in its New York state offices that include Gloversville, Sherburne, Middletown and Monroe.

The website says Frontier is a an S&P 500 company and is included in the Fortune 500 list of America's largest corporations. It offers broadband, voice, satellite video, wireless Internet data access, and entertainment services such as TumTiki.com. Frontier also has bundled offerings and specialized bundles for residential customers, small businesses and home offices and advanced communications for medium and large businesses in 27 states, the website says.

Frontier's approximately 14,400 employees are based in the United States.
