Sophie K. Nessel

Sophie K. Nessel, 94, passed away on May 4, 2013, the daughter of Max and Minnie Kaplan. She was born in 1918 in Columbus, Ohio. Sophie grew up in New York City and moved to Gloversville when she was 20 years old with her parents. In June of 1944, she married Chester Nessel. They shared a wonderful life together and raised three daughters. Charity was an important part of their lives as were family, education, golf, bridge, square dancing and travel. She lived by the words initiative, empathy and follow through.

Mrs. Nessel was a life member and past president of the Gloversville Chapter of Hadassah. In addition, she was a member of the Jewish Community Center and Knesseth Israel Synagogue. Sophie loved upstate New York and spent over 70 years supporting and enjoying life in Gloversville.

Mrs. Nessel is survived by her daughters, Barbara (Robert) Weiner of Gloversville, Marsha (Norman) Hilsenrad of Windham Center, Conn., Anita (Richard) Lichtenberg of Haverford, Pa.; grandchildren, Sarah Weiner of Boston, Mass., Michael Weiner of San Diego, CA; Daniel (Naomi) Lichtenberg of New York City, and Noah (Natasha) Lichtenberg of Salt Lake City, Utah. She is also survived by her sister, Judy Kaplan of San Diego, Calif.; nieces, nephews and cousins.

In addition to her beloved husband, Chester, to whom she was married to for 59 years; and her parents. She was predeceased by her two brothers, Jack and Eli Kaplan.

A funeral service will be held 2 p.m. Tuesday, May 7, 2013, at Knesseth Israel Synagogue, 34 E. Fulton St., Gloversville, with Rabbi Rose Durbin officiating. Interment will be in Knesseth Israel Cemetery on Clyde Street in Gloversville.
