A driver asks why roads are so bad

April 10, 2013
The Leader Herald

This is a letter to the managers of the Fulton County highway department and the Gloversville Department of Public Works.

This is in response to the horrible road conditions I had to endure March 18 and then again on April 2 in order to return home from work.

I work in Schenectady from 3 to 11 p.m. I have been doing this for the last 11 years.

This year, these conditions have been the worst. You both should be ashamed of yourselves for allowing these roads to be this treacherous. I can honestly tell when I go from Montgomery County to Fulton County, the roads become very treacherous.

I want to know why. I have seen articles about this being a very mild winter and that we have surplus salt for the roads. My question is, why is it not being used appropriately? Why aren't there any road crews out during the night hours?

I travel the main roads, and the other night, they were glare ice. I literally slid through a stop sign due to the very slick road. I would like to know why. I do not blame the road crews due to the fact the managers are the ones who make and plan their work schedules. Do you not see the weather reports and plan ahead? Do you think that everyone is home and tucked into bed and no one will be on the roads from 10 p.m. to 6 a.m.? I'm here to tell you people are driving on these roads. For the money we taxpayers have to pay, we should have safe roads to travel. Answer my questions and explain to me and the good taxpaying citizens of Fulton County and Gloversville why we do not have safe roads to drive on in the winter.

I really do not think these are hard questions to answer.

Also, maybe you could meet with your counterparts in Montgomery and Schenectady counties and find out how or why they manage to have safe roads. Maybe they could give you suggestions.

All I'm asking for are safe roads to travel on at night so I can get home alive and well.
