Library director spells out rise in activity for council

April 2, 2013

JOHNSTOWN - The activity at Johnstown Public Library rose in several categories last year, library Director Erica Wing told the Common Council on Monday at City Hall.

In her monthly report, Wing said her facility compiled 2012 statistics for a report it is mandated to provide to the state.

"All the numbers are great," the library director said.

Wing said adult program attendance at the South Market Street facility increased by 26 percent from 2011 to 2012.

She said check-out items are also on the rise. The library circulated 88,582 items last year, compared to 86,266 items for 2011 - an increase of 2,316 items.

Wing said DVDs, e-books and audiobooks now account for about 32 percent of all items checked out.

Wing said the library in 2012 also had 12,589 visits to its website - www.johnstownpubliclibrary.info - an increase of 24 percent from 2011.

The library had 13,665 materials received from other libraries, and 7,476 materials provided to other libraries in 2012. There were 9,565 public computer sessions last year, Wing reported. Overall, in 2012 there were 81,427 visits made to the library, which was open 2,414 hours.

Elsewhere in her report, Wing told the council the library is "super excited" and "still prepping" for its planned Johnstown Classic Mini-Golf fundraiser from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. April 20 at the facility. The library's 17th annual fundraiser was known for many years as the Storybook Sundae fundraiser, but this year it involves mini-golf being played inside the facility. The library is being transformed into an 18-hole miniature golf course for the event.

Wing said people have "accepted" the change in the type of event, although it will still involve themed baskets that will be raffled off. She said there now are more than 50 baskets ready to be raffled off.

This week being a vacation for school children, Wing said the library has many activities, including crafts and a movie night.
