New cafe opens in YMCA building

JOHNSTOWN - A new cafe offering healthy options opened March 4 in the Fulton County YMCA at 213 Harrison Street.

The Healthy Beanery Cafe, owned and operated by Nicholas Coppola, is located inside the building and is open to the public. Business hours are 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. Monday through Friday, 7 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday and closed Sunday. Hours may vary during holidays and summer months.

Fresh-brewed coffee, tea, smoothies, and healthy foods like salads, soups and wraps are on the menu.

Gluten-free and salt-free products are available by order. He also sells bagged coffee, and specialty coffees are available by order.

Coppola offers many low-calorie foods, and the philosophy behind the business is to offer healthy options to people on the go.

Credit cards are accepted for orders more than $10. Coppola also offers catering services.

Coppola is a Johnstown High School graduate and attended Schenectady Community College.

He has trained and worked at Cornell's Restaurant in Schenectady, Romanos Italian Restaurant, Partners Restaurant, Lanzis on the Lake and Sport Island Pub. He also worked for the Walt Disney World Culinary program in Florida.

Coppola is the son of Karen Coppola who organizes events like the Classic Image Johnstown Holiday Parade. Food service runs in the family as Karen once had her own catering business. Nicholas has helped cook for many events in Johnstown.

His father, Mickey Coppola, owns M&K Construction. Nicholas said his parents have been supportive of his culinary ventures.
