Mr. William F. Whitaker Sr., age 82, of Gloversville, died Monday morning, March 4, 2013, at Wells Nursing Home, Johnstown.
He was born December 22, 1930, in Fish Creek, N.Y., the son of the late Frank and Leona Clapper Whitaker. He served in the U.S. Army in Germany during the Korean War. He was a self-employed auto mechanic in Port Ewen, N.Y. and moved from the Connelly, N.Y. area to Gloversville in 2004.
Bill was an avid New York Yankees fan and enjoyed stock cars and camping.
He was married on February 21, 1972, to Sylvia N. Conklin Whitaker, who survives and resides in Gloversville. Also surviving are five children, Jean Murray (Paul) of Ulster Park, N.Y., James Whitaker, Peggy Dennis (George), JoAnn West and Lisa Coddington, all of Kingston, N.Y.; as well as 17 grandchildren; many great-grandchildren; and a sister-in-law, Deborah Conklin. He was predeceased by a son, William F. Whitaker Jr. in 2010.
The family will receive relatives and friends from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Thursday, March 7, at Walrath & Stewart Funeral Home, 51 Fremont St., Gloversville, where a funeral service will follow at 1 p.m., with the Rev. Dr. R.W. Williams officiating.
Cremation will follow at Park View Crematorium, Schenectady. Memorial contributions may be made in lieu of flowers to the James A. Brennan Memorial Humane Society, 437 Nine Mile Tree Road, Gloversville, NY 12078.
