BALLSTON?SPA - Saratoga County officials approved a deal with the Hudson River-Black River Regulating District on Tuesday, agreeing to pay $1.2 million to the district.
The county is the last of five to approve a deal submitted to it by the regulating district to pay for downstream flood-prevention benefits provided by the district's Conkingville Dam on the upper Great Sacandaga Lake reservoir.
The district has sought payment from the five counties since a 2008 court order said the district could no longer charge downstream hydropower companies for flood-control services.
The regulating district board will vote on the settlement at its meeting at 10 a.m. March 12 in Utica.
Once the settlement is complete, the regulating district will look to pay Fulton County $1.66 million in back taxes owed to the Broadalbin-Perth, Mayfield and Northville school districts, whose lost revenue the county had been forced to cover.
The regulating district still owes school taxes for the 2011-12 and 2012-13 school years.
