Daniel H. ‘Danny’ Deuel

Daniel H. "Danny" Deuel, 66, of West Rutland, passed away peacefully Wednesday, February 13, 2013, with his family at his side at The Pines of Rutland.

He was born in Broadalbin, N.Y., the son of James and Edna (Pitcher) Deuel.

Dan was a graduate of Broadalbin Central High School and a 1969 graduate of Castleton State College, with a B.S. degree in math.

From 1969 to 2001, he was a math teacher at West Rutland High School, and from 1969 to 1974, he was the boys basketball coach, winning the State Championship in 1973. From 1980 to 2007, he was a licensed real estate salesperson for Century 21 Rutland Realty.

Danny was active with local and state government. He was elected to 11 consecutive terms of the West Rutland Board of Selectmen and elected to four consecutive two-year terms in the Vermont House, representing the towns of Clarendon, Ira, Proctor and West Rutland.

He was a member of the board of directors of the Economic Development Council of Southwest Vermont, where he served as president for two years.

Surviving are his wife, Suzanne (Stratton) Steele Deuel of West Rutland, and her three children, Tom Steele, his wife, Diane and children Christina, Nicholas and Rachael of Apple Valley, Minn., Kendra Steele Kearing and sons, Jacob and Adam of Westfield, Mass., and Joel Steele, wife, Kathy and children, Rylan and Addison of Plattsburgh, N.Y.; a great-grandchild, Avery; his former wife, Nancy M. Deuel of Rutland; two brothers, Ned Deuel of Syracuse, N.Y., and Richard Deuel and wife, Debby of Broadalbin, N.Y., nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held Saturday, March 2, 2013, at 11 a.m. at the First Baptist Church in Rutland. Officiating will be the Rev. Mark Heiner, pastor. A reception will follow.

Visiting hours will be held Friday, March 1, from 4 to 7 p.m. at Clifford Funeral Home in Rutland.
