Jeanne V. Carpenter, 85, of Manassas , Va., passed away on January 24, 2013, at Warren Memorial Hospital in Front Royal, Va.
A funeral mass will be held on Friday, February 8, at 11 a.m. at Holy Trinity Church in Johnstown, N.Y.
Jeanne was born October 21, 1927, in Johnstown , N.Y., daughter of the late Anthony and Louise Hladik Valachovic. She graduated from Johnstown High School then attended Albany State Teachers College. After graduation she taught at Bainbridge High School. She married Bill Carpenter of Gloversville in 1951 and they moved, first to Madison, N.Y., then Scotia, N.Y., where Bill taught school. They settled in Scotia, and Jeanne raised their growing family. In 1968 Bill was transferred to the Washington, D.C. area moving the family to Maryland. After several other work transfers, Jeanne and Bill and their two youngest children settled in Manassas, Va. After Bill's death in 1977, Jeanne worked for IBM and other local companies while raising her youngest children and paying off the mortage on her house. She worked for Manasass Park City School System doing payroll and accounting work and retired in 1997.
In retirement she enjoyed vegetable gardening and working in her yard. She traveled on several trips with her daughters and granddaughter to Ellis Island, Longwood Gardens, Lancaster, Pa. and Washington, D.C. Each year she would drive to Fulton County to visit her sister's, brother's, and husband's family and attend the annual family picnic. She loved celebrating Christmas with her family and enjoyed spoiling them with special gifts and delicious meals.
After breaking an ankle in 2010, Jeanne moved to Amerisist Assisted Living in Front Royal to be close to her youngest daughter.
Surviving are: four children and their spouses, Allison and her husband, Jack Rivetti of Silver Spring, Md., Paul and his wife, Tracie Carpenter of Virginia Beach, Va., John and his wife, Heather Carpenter of Leonardo, N.J., and Sara and her husband, Lee McAfee of Linden, Va.; one brother, Paul Valachovic of Johnstown, N.Y.; one brother-in-law, Mark Cominole of Gloversville, N.Y.; four grandchildren, Nick Rivetti, Jill Rivetti, Mark Rivetti, and Laurie Carpenter; one great-granddaughter, Madelynn Carpenter; and five nieces and nephews. Along with her parents and husband, Mrs. Carpenter was preceded in death by her sister, Betty Cominole; and a son, Billy Carpenter.
