Area nordic skiers kick off season

GLENS FALLS - More than 400 nordic ski racers took part in the Queensbury Invitational at Crandall Park.

Saratoga Springs won the boys team title with 32 points, while Old Forge (36 points) was second and New Paltz (40) was third. Queensbury (41) was fourth and Lake Placid (54) was fifth.

Mayfield (97) was 10th and Johnstown (149) was 15th.

Old Forge won the girls team title with a total of 19 points, while Scotia-Glenville was second with 25 points. Queensbury (52 points) was third, Shenendehowa (60) was fourth and Mayfield (61) was fifth. Johnstown (175) placed 15th and Canajoharie (182) was 16th.

Saratoga Springs' Brian Halligan claimed the boys individual title, winning the 7.5k race with a time of 27:08. Queensbury's Ben Anderson (27:46) was second and Shenendehowa's Austin Huneck (28:16) was third.

Tom McClellan (30:50) was eighth to lead Mayfield.

Mitch Akowicz (32:54) was 22nd for the Panthers, Austin Davis (38:12) was 67th and Ryan Bumpus (39:45) was 76th.

Eric Brower led Johnstown, placing 28th with a time of 34:06.

Cameron Roten (35:51) was 43rd for the Sir Bills and Jack Brabant (40:48) was 78th.

Old Forge's Megan Greene won the 3.1-mile girls race with a time of 17:25. Saranac Lake's Elena Beideck (17:38) was second and Old Forge's Maddie Phaneuf (17:40) was third.

Lidija Nikollaj led Mayfield, finishing fifth with a time of 17:46.

Emily Cromie (20:26) was 21st for the Lady Panthers, while Hanna Cromie (21:26) was 35th.

Morgan Swedick was Johnstown's top finisher, placing 40th with a time of 22:13.

Quincey Brabant (24:38) was 65th for the Lady Bills, Kayla Groesbeck (25:29) was 70th, Madison Smrtic (26:18) was 72nd and Jerica Holland (27:16) was 77th.

Catie Corrigan paced Canajoharie, finishing 50th with a time of 22:59.

Rosemary Trahan (24:04) was 61st for the Lady Cougars, Paige Shovelton (26:03) was 71st and Quinn Li O'Shea (26:21) was 73rd.
