Mr. Elwood H. Wemple, age 83, of Mayfield, died Saturday evening, December 22, 2012, at Mountain Valley Hospice, Gloversville.
He was born June 25, 1929, in Mayfield, the son of the late Henry and Norma Olson Wemple. He was a 1947 graduate of Mayfield High School and a 1952 graduate of New York State College of Forestry in Syracuse with a B.S. degree in forestry.
Elwood served from 1952 to1954 as an aerial photo interpreter for U.S. Army Intelligence in Japan and Korea. He received the Korean Service Medal, the United Nations Service Medal and the National Defense Service Medal.
He worked in Maine for several paper and pulp companies including International Paper. In 1961, he worked as firefighting crew chief for the Bureau of Land Management in Fairbanks, Alaska. He later worked for International Transport of Rochester, Minnesota, a company that relocated home trailers for military servicemen around the country as they were transferred.
Following his retirement, Elwood built a home in Mayfield where he lived until his illness. As a disabled veteran he was cared for by the Albany VA Hospital.
He is survived by: his sister, Kathryn W. Montanye of Mayfield; and several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by: a brother and a sister, Robert O. Wemple and Janis W. Dimick.
A private service will take place in the spring in Mayfield Cemetery at the convenience of the family.
