GLOVERSVILLE - A city man was charged with attempted assault and trying to strangle his spouse in a domestic dispute on Christmas Eve.

Michael W. Thornton, 51, of 164 Bleecker St. was arrested by city police Monday and charged with third-degree attempted assault, a class B misdemeanor, and second-degree strangulation, a class D felony.

Police said Thornton was arrested after the investigation of a domestic violence incident involving his spouse. She was in the process of leaving the house when he knocked her to the ground and attempted to strangle her, police said.

The victim refused medical attention, police said.

Thornton was processed and arraigned in City Court by Judge John N. Clo.
