I'm writing to urge our local legislators and our community to support the Cancer Services Program of Fulton and Montgomery Counties. This program offers vital screening services for the prevention and early detection of breast, cervical and colorectal cancer - diseases that touch far too many people. These services are free for eligible men and women.
Like so many others with a similar story, my sweet mother had breast cancer, and I also lost my dearest, longtime friend to this disease. Getting my annual mammogram is something I have always been diligent about, especially with my family history. While I've always supported the Cancer Services Program, it wasn't until very recently, finding myself uninsured, that I was a recipient of their free screening services personally. I was treated with the utmost dignity and respect by everyone involved with the process, and I couldn't be more grateful that these services were available to me.
Early detection saves lives. This funded program, overseen by the New York State Department of Health, screens approximately 70,000 women and men in our state each year. Please continue to support this program.
