On Nov. 11, my son called me at work and I was informed our home was on fire. After my prayers were answered on my way home that my children were all fine, I was shoved into a world which I am not normally familiar with.
Aside from being homeless, which was devastating, the outpouring of support, warmth, generosity and concern was absolutely overwhelming. The homeless part wasn't half as horrible as it would have been if it wasn't for the wonderful people in the community. The next thing I knew, I had a committee (I have a committee?), which was organizing a benefit to help myself and my children. Some of these people I had never even met before. Aside from it being the Christmas season, which everybody knows can be difficult, here are individuals taking their hard-earned income and shopping for my children, handing me checks, donating clothes, furniture, anything and everything that I could possibly need or want, just because they can and they want to. Just because I had fallen on hard times, and they could and - even more unbelievable - chose to.
After saying "thank you" more times than I could possibly imagine, even though it certainly does not feel like it is nearly enough, I realized that after all the horrible things I see and hear about on the news, I live in an extremely special section of the planet called Northville. If the Mayan calendar theory is actually in debate up in heaven, I'll bet the angels have decided to fight to keep the world going because of one special place in the world that has shown so much heartwarming kindness and generosity to a woman and her children in their time of need. Who knows, maybe you saved the world.
You are all such wonderful and special people. Thank you, Northville.
