Knights pin league loss on Braves

December 21, 2012
By JAMES A. ELLIS , The Leader Herald

FONDA - A short lineup, due to illness, came into play for the Fonda-Fultonville wrestlers when they faced Lansingburgh Thursday night at Fonda-Fultonville High School.

Despite pin falls from Kyle Gray and Dominic Mancini, the Braves came up short in the Colonial Council match, 41-24.

"We started off great at the beginning of the year, but we haven't had a full team in practice in weeks," Fonda-Fultonville coach Matt Lewis said. "We are on the road to recovery, but that is why I didn't have a 170-pounder tonight. They made some moves that kind of surprised me, so we are making changes as we go."

Gray picked up the Braves' first victory on the mat. Falling behind 9-2 after the first period of the 99-pound bout, Gray rallied for a reversal and a pair of near falls to take a 10-9 lead into the final period.

Gray turned Brian Houle for the pin with 1:11 remaining for the win and cut Lansingburgh's lead in the team scoring to 16-12.

The Knights received a forfeit at 106 pounds to take a 22-12 advantage before the Braves' Kelsey Gray battled Pat Flemming through two scoreless periods. Fleming picked up the decision with an escape and a takedown in the final 30 seconds for a 3-0 decision and a 25-12 lead.

Lansingburgh got back-to-back pins from Nick Cioffi and Jeru Akel to give the Knights a 37-12 advantage, which was enough for the win, with three bouts remaining.

After Fonda-Fultonville received a forfeit at 138, Dominic Mancini came through with a first-period pin fall for the Braves at 145 to put the team score at 37-24.

Tuishen Graham closed out the match with a 4-point decision over Ryan Park to put the final score at 41-24.

"I am never super happy with a loss, but I was very happy with the way the kids wrestled tonight," Lewis said. "The kids wrestled for six minutes with heart and did not give up. That is all I ever ask of them. "

The Braves will take to the mat next Saturday when they participate in the Johnstown Duals at Johnstown High School.
