Logger killed in Bleecker

December 17, 2012
The Leader Herald

BLEECKER - A Montgomery County logger was killed instantly when a tree he was cutting fell on him Friday afternoon off Barlow Road, Fulton County Sheriff Thomas Lorey said today.

Lorey said James A. Vanderwerker Sr., 41, of Fort Johnson, "was cutting a tree with a chainsaw and apparently it came down and landed on him."

Lorey said the accident occurred about 2:30 p.m., but he said four to five loggers who were with the victim weren't able to notify the Sheriff's Department of the accident for about an hour because they were in a wooded area.

"There was no cellphone service," Lorey said.

He said Vanderwerker was pronounced dead at the scene by Fulton County Coroner Art Simmons Jr. The body was transported to Nathan Littauer Hospital, where an autopsy was done Saturday.

Lorey said Vanderwerker worked for a logging company owned by Mayfield resident Jake Vannostrand, who couldn't be reached this morning for comment.
