Rams third at Montgomery County Duals

AMSTERDAM - Heading into the 20th annual Montgomery County Duals, the Amsterdam wrestling team expected a tough test.

Against some of the toughest opposition that they will see this season, the Rams turned in a solid effort, placing third in the six-team dual-meet tournament at Amsterdam High School on Saturday.

Monroe Woodbury won the team title by going undefeated on the day. The Crusaders posted wins over Amsterdam (57-16), Ilion (65-9), Whitehall (76-6) and Peru (53-15).

Peru finished second with a 4-1 record, defeating Ilion (50-27), Whitehall (56-21), Monroe Woodbury B (65-18) and Amsterdam (45-28).

The host Rams placed third with a 3-2 record, posting wins over Whitehall (69-15), Ilion (47-32) and Monroe Woodbury B (61-15). Ilion placed fourth with a 2-3 record, posting wins over Whitehall and Monroe Woodbury B (61-17). Whitehall was 1-4, registering its lone win over the Monroe Woodbury B team by a 37-36 margin to place fifth. The Monroe Woodbury B squad was sixth after going winless on the day.

Amsterdam had 15 different wrestlers post at least one win Saturday.

Chris Velasquez (106/113 pounds), Brandon Lapi (132/138), Dal Orengo (138/145), Rob Santiago (170-182), Christian Lopez (195) and Ken Garcia (220) all went 4-1 on the day for the Rams. Marcus Torres (152/160) and James Marquez (160/170) each went 3-2 for Amsterdam, while Adam Tatun (106), Romeo Jones (113), Chris Garrison (182) and Joe Kelly (285) each posted two wins.

In its first match, Amsterdam faced Peru from Section VII. The Indians won 10 of 15 weight classes on their way to a 45-28 victory.

David Stickney (126), Tanner Phillips (138) Taylor Avanzato (195) and Luke McKee (285) all won by pinfall for Peru, while Kyler Agoney (120) won by technical fall. Troy Seymour (170) won by major decision for the Indians, while Gaige Cosme (99), Nicholas Forget (132), Jordan Bushey (145) and Noah Phillips (152) won by decision. Forget posted a 4-1 win over Lapi, who has placed in the top four at the last two Division I state tournaments.

Velasquez (113) and Garcia (220) won by pin for Amsterdam, while Santiago won by major decision. Tatun (106) and Dan Banewicz (160) added forfeit wins for the Rams.

In their second contest, Amsterdam rebounded with a 69-15 win over Whitehall.

Velasquez (106), Jones (113), Lapi (132), Torres (152), Marquez (160), Garrison (182) and Garcia (220) all won by pinfall for the Rams, while Santiago (170) added a win by decision.

Jorge Rivera (99), Orengo (138), Lopez (195) and Kelly (285) all won by forfeit for Amsterdam.

Chad Amerio (120) and Al Aubin (126) won by pinfall for Whitehall, while Jacob Gregory won by decision.

Amsterdam slipped to 1-2 on the day following a third-round loss to Section IX's Monroe Woodbury.

The Crusaders won 11 of 15 weight classes on their way to a 57-16 victory.

Vinny Vespa (99), Evan Barczak (106), Jamie Panuto (113), Alex Baum (126), Andrew Voelker (170) and Nick McShea (182) won by pin for Monroe Woodbury.

Paul Smoot (120) won by technical fall for the Crusaders and Rob Kelly (220) won by major decision.

Evan Psathas (145) and Drake Barczak (152) won by decision for Monroe Woodbury, while Sean Esklisden (285) won by forfeit.

Lapi (132) won by major decision for Amsterdam, while Orengo (138) and Marquez (160) won by decision.

Lopez (195) added a forfeit victory for the Rams.

In its final two matches, Amsterdam posted wins over Ilion (47-32) and Monroe Woodbury B (61-15) to finish 3-2.

Against Ilion, the Rams got pins from Velasquez (113), Santiago (182), Lopez (195) and Garcia (220).

Dal Orengo (145) won by technical fall for Amsterdam, while Tatun (106), Lapi (138) and Torres (160) won by forfeit.

Tanner Cook (99) and Laken Cook (132) posted pins for Ilion, while Daniel Sportello (120) and Sean Jackson (152) won by major decision.

Andrew Burch (126) and Landry Cook (170) each won by decision for the Golden Bombers, and Brandon Yager (285) added a forfeit victory.

In its final match of the day, Amsterdam rolled to a win over the Monroe Woodbury B team, winning 12 of 15 weight classes.

Lapi (132), Torres (152), Marquez (160), Lopez (195), Garcia (220) and Kelly (285) all won by pin for the Rams, while Orengo (145) won by major decision.

Velasquez (106), Jones (113) and Santiago (170) won by decision for Amsterdam, and Nelson Quinones (138) and Garrison (182) won by forfeit.

Matt Bracco (120) and Tom Moloney (126) both won by pin for Monroe Woodbury, while Jacob Friedman (99) won by decision.

Amsterdam (10-3 overall) will travel to LaSalle on Wednesday for a Big 10 contest.
